# Feel It

Reading feelings in social situations: how a child feels, why, and what to say

A picture of a social situation, such as a girl whose ice cream fell, and a recorded question about it: “How does the girl feel?”, “Why is she sad?”, or “What could you say to her?” The learner taps one of 3 answer cards, or answers out loud and you score it. There are 12 pictures, with 2 or 3 for each of 5 feelings: happy, sad, mad, scared, and surprised.

## When

- Teaching feelings from faces, then from what is happening in the picture.
- Practicing “why” questions about a picture, with the reason plainly in view.
- Practicing what to say to a friend who is sad, scared, or excited. With Say it, the learner gives the words out loud.

## Why

- In each picture one child shows the feeling, and the cause is plainly in view. Each feeling is in 2 or 3 pictures with different children and places, so the face is the cue, not the setting.
- Each feeling has one face (the brows and mouth change, the child stays the same), so a face card shows only the feeling.
- Wrong answers are always right answers from pictures with a different feeling, so no wrong answer could also be right, and the tool never offers a mean or silly line. Answers never say he or she, so the pronoun can’t give the answer away.
- The question and the choices are recorded, so they sound the same every time. The right answer moves among the cards and never sits in the same place 3 times running.
- A wrong tap fades and the right card pulses. That is a prompt, and it isn’t scored as correct.

## How

1. On the setup screen, choose a level, then tap **Play**:

    - **How they feel** — “How does the girl feel?” The learner picks the face that matches: happy, sad, mad, scared, or surprised.
    - **Why** — “Why is she sad?” The learner picks the reason they can see in the picture.
    - **What to say** — “What could you say to her?” The learner picks what fits the feeling, such as “Oh no! Are you okay?”
    - **All three** — One picture, then all 3 questions in a row: how the child feels, why, and what to say. Like a conversation card.

    Under **Answer**, choose:

    - **Tap the answer** — The learner taps one of the answer cards. The first tap is scored.
    - **Say it** — The answer cards are hidden. The learner answers out loud, and you tap Correct, Prompted, or Incorrect. The answer shows in small type for you.

With Tap the answer, also choose **Choices** (3 choices or 2 choices) and **Read the choices aloud** (On or Off).
2. Under **Praise**, choose:
    - **On** — A correct answer also plays a short praise line, such as “Great job!”
    - **Off** — A correct answer shows the star and moves on, with no spoken praise.Praise starts off. Turning it on or off doesn’t change scoring or start a new phase on the graph.
3. The question plays right away. Tap the speaker button to hear it again. The question is also written beside it.
4. With Tap the answer, let the learner tap a card. A right answer earns a star and moves on. A wrong one prompts the right card. With Say it, listen to the learner and tap **Correct**, **Prompted**, or **Incorrect**. The tool makes no sound, so you give the feedback.
5. Use **Skip**, **Log**, **Hold to reset**, and **End** the same way as in Find It. Rounds are 6 questions. **Next time** in the Log brings that picture back in the next round.

**Saved to the dashboard:** The first answer to every question, plus skips. Each question is a target (Why is she sad? (ice cream)), and the most common errors show the answer tapped instead, or Prompted with Say it. Changing the level, the number of choices, or between Tap the answer and Say it starts a new phase on the graph.
